DESIGNER PROFILE >>> JEREMY SCOTT

Jeremy Scott is a Missouri-born fashion designer. He attended the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY for fashion design. Jeremy is best known for his outrageous and sometimes comical designs. After showing in Paris for several years in order to establish his name, he returned to the United States. His unique creations have been worn by celebrities including Paris Hilton, Kanye West, Lindsay Lohan, Björk, Robyn, Cameron Diaz, Christina Aguilera, Kylie Minogue, Madonna and his good friend Cory Kennedy. His designs incorporate unconventional looks, including one-legged pants. Jeremy was named number 31 in the Face’s ‘Most Important People in Fashion’ issue, ranking higher than Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney. He is also stylist for the band Fischerspooner.

Where else but in fashion would a sexcapade of peep shows, clam-shaped clothes, and greased-up male models indulging in a little on-runway smack-and-grab be A-OK? True, it does seem that only Jeremy Scott can get away with it, but no one flies his freak flag quite as proudly as the designer does. And after more than ten years designing his signature line, he is just as controversial and avant-garde as ever—with a fondness for one-legged pants, no less.

WHAT'S "HAUTE COUTURE" YOU ASK?

Haute couture (French for "high sewing" or "high dressmaking, refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted fashions. It originally referred to Englishman Charles Frederick Worth's work, produced in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century. In modern France, haute couture is a "protected name" that can be used only by firms that meet certain well-defined standards. However, the term is also used loosely to describe all high-fashion custom-fitted clothing, whether it is produced in Paris or in other fashion capitals such as Milan, London, Rome, New York and Tokyo. Haute couture is made to order for a specific customer, and it is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques.




Legal Terms:
In France, the term haute couture is protected by law and is defined by the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Paris based in Paris, France. Their rules state that only "those companies mentioned on the list drawn up each year by a commission domiciled at the Ministry for Industry are entitled to avail themselves" of the label haute couture. The criteria for haute couture were established in 1945 and updated in 1992.

To earn the right to call itself a couture house and to use the term haute couture in its advertising and any other way, members of the Chambre syndicale de la haute couture must follow these rules:
- Design made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings.
- Have a workshop (atelier) in Paris that employs at least fifteen people full-time.
- Each season (i.e., twice a year), present a collection to the Paris press, comprising at least thirty-five runs with outfits for both daytime wear and evening wear.

DESIGNER PROFILE >>> VIVIENNE WESTWOOD


The Label
Like no other fashion designer, Vivienne Westwood single-handedly changed the way rock stars dressed. And in many ways, she’s responsible for the look of punk and New Wave. She and then-partner Malcolm McLaren (manager for the Sex Pistols) opened their Let It Rock boutique in London’s Chelsea in 1971, and it served as a platform and safe haven for the burgeoning punk scene. Acts like the Pistols and the New York Dolls wore her signature look—skintight leather with tons of zippers—like a uniform. And though she may no longer work the strictly punk ethos, Westwood still infuses her ready-to-wear, officially launched in 1981, with plenty of edge. Unafraid of ripped hems and torn seams, she renders everything with Saville Row–worthy tailoring and incredible technique.

The Designer
The English-born Westwood studied at the University of Westminster after which she became a primary-school teacher. She taught until McLaren decided to open Let It Rock, pulling Westwood down the punk path that would eventually lead her to fashion stardom. She still owns the shop, which is now called World’s End, where she sells her signature line as well as her punkier, younger collection Anglomania. In 2004, the prestigious Victoria & Albert Museum hosted a retrospective of Westwood’s career.

BUTCH DIVA >>> THE BIGGER PICTURE

The wheels in my head go round and round, round and round, round and round...I spent some nights out and about last week starting my social tour and spreading the news of my vision and my plans to my fellow industry peers and it always feels great to have your dreams embraced and your thought process understood. For the next 6 months you'll be able to get a taste of BUTCH DIVA at local bklyn sample sales, for example at up in coming vendor hot spots "BROOKLYN FLEA" and "HABANA OUTPOST". Also working on getting a few key looks into "PIECES OF BKLYN". Plus shops in Manhattan include Patricia Field and Lounge Soho. Be sure to stay tuned for all the details on availability...

The bigger picture however is get this grind in motion so I can make my journey back to Trinidad in January and be able to stay 6 months to establish business ventures there. A "lounge boutique" to be more specific. The clientele is in place but the resources are not, and that's where I come in. To present style and trends to these females in a way that no one has for them yet. From what I've seen while there, they don't have the same fashion resources we have but it was crystal clear how bad they yearned for it.

So the nxt 6 months is all about the hustle and grind to get me where I want to be. As long as the passion and will to succeed remains, the work to get it done is a pleasure.

I'm focused. Are you?
